Taking Care of Your Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal can be beneficial for you as long as you take care of it properly. Here are some do’s and don’ts for your garbage disposal:

-Do clean it with ice: Using ice cubes is one of the easiest ways to clean your garbage disposal. Take a handful of ice cubes and place them in your drain. Make sure you put the rubber stopper over the disposal entrance before you turn it on.

-Don’t grind any non-food items: It is common for people to put stickers from fruit or plastic into the garbage disposal which can damage it. It was made to only handle food waste.

-Do use a degreaser: Using a degreaser helps to prevent fat from building up in your garbage disposal. It also helps it to run more efficiently and eliminates any odors.

-Don’t grind these specific foods: Garbage disposals can’t withstand all foods. Avoid putting these foods down your garbage disposal: eggshells, rice, animal bones and fat, and pasta.
